Book Launch Party
Join us to launch The Nest We Built, a children’s book created to reflect the heart and mission of The Nest: safety, belonging, and hope for families in crisis. Designed for children and caregivers alike, the book uses gentle storytelling and warm illustrations to affirm that strong communities are built when we are there for one another.
Bring the whole family for an evening of light bites, a lively book reading, illustrations unveiling, and the song release of “Hey There Little Bird”.
The Author
JoEllen Wilhoite
JoEllen has spent her life caring deeply about children and families who love them. Through her work with a nonprofit organization, she sees every day just how important it is for children to feel safe, supported, and heard - and how a little guidance can make a big difference.
Long before writing children's books, JoEllen followed a calling to help others.
As a college student at Western Kentucky University, she spent her summers offering care to underserved communities. She later earned degrees in psychology and sociology, with a minor in criminology, all rooted in her desire to better understand and support people through life's challenges.
Over the years, JoEllen has taken on many roles, each one teaching her something new. She worked in the equine industry, public relations, advertising, and even ran a business of her own. She served as a Court Appointed Special Advocate, an Operation Read tutor, supported efforts with Bluegrass Crime Stoppers, and contributed to the Specialized Alternatives for Families and Youth (SAFY) State Advisory Board. No matter where life takes her, JoEllen's heart remains devoted to helping children feel safe and families feel supported.
Today, JoEllen lives in Lexington, Kentucky. She is the author of Safety Safari, an interactive children's book created to gently teach kids about staying safe, now used in youth programs to spark important conversations. With more stories on the way, JoEllen hopes each one encourages readers to lead with kindness, grow in empathy, and carry a spirit of care and compassion for others wherever life leads them.
The Illustrator
Pamela McDaniel
Pamela is a nature-inspired artist based in Central Kentucky, where the woods, gardens, and quiet corners of the natural world offer endless stories to discover. She is drawn to the small, often unnoticed moments where light, movement, and life come together in gentle, unexpected ways.
With a background in both fine art and education, she spent many years teaching others to slow down and truly see. Working primarily in oil, Pamela creates soft, expressive illustrations that invite viewers into a world where nature feels a little more magical, and everything has a story to tell.
For every child who pauses to watch a butterfly, listen to the wind in the trees, and discover the quiet magic hidden in nature, may they always carry that sense of wonder with them.
The Songwriter
Buffy Lawson
Buffy has worn many hats as a recording artist and songwriter. She achieved notable recognition through collaboration with the iconic Neil Diamond and has had her songs recorded by legendary artists such as Dolly Parton, Kenny Rogers, Willie Nelson, Kris Kristofferson, Randy Travis, and Lorrie Morgan, among others.
Her passion for helping others led her to establish My Vibe, a nonprofit organization under The Foster Care Council, which decorates first apartments for individuals aging out of the foster system.
Buffy's commitment to advocacy shines through her support for various organizations, including The Nest, Arbor Youth, Jessamine County Homeless Coalition, and The Lucky Ones. A proponent of proactive change, she often says, "If you see a fire, grab a hose."

Dollars for Diapers 2026
Let’s Keep Lexington's Babies Happy and Healthy!
Every day, families in our community face the difficult decision of choosing between essentials like food, rent, and diapers. The Nest in Lexington, Kentucky, is here to provide critical support, but we can’t do it alone.
Help us raise $8,000 to fully fund the diaper need at The Nest for all of 2026!
Prefer to buy diapers and have them delivered?
Why Diapers Matter
1 in 3 families in the U.S. struggles to afford enough diapers to keep their babies clean and dry.
Babies without clean diapers are more likely to experience rashes, infections, and other health issues.
Government assistance programs like SNAP and WIC don’t cover diapers, leaving many families without options.
How Your Support Helps
Every dollar you donate goes directly to purchasing diapers for families in need right here in Lexington. By participating in the Dollars for Diapers Diaper Drive, you’re providing more than just diapers; you’re giving peace of mind, health, and dignity to local families.
Get Involved
Donate Funds: A $50 donation provides diapers for a Lexington baby for a month!
Host a Drive: Gather your friends, coworkers, or community groups to collect diapers or raise funds.
Spread the Word: Share our message on social media and encourage others to join the cause. Use the hashtag #DiapersForLex to show your support!
How to Donate
Donating is easy! Visit www.thenestlexington.org/donate to contribute securely online. Prefer to donate diapers instead? Drop them off at The Nest’s location at 530 N Limestone St., Lexington, KY 40508 during business hours.
