LEARN MORE ABOUT RIDERS UP!

In 2020 during the height of the pandemic, Lexington local Katy Jones founded Riders Up Custom Cavaliers, a custom jockey cavalier company, all designed and hand-painted by Katy out of her garage.

Jones said cavaliers are seen all over Kentucky often matching a farm's silks or donning a family symbol or crest are usually used as a symbol of hospitality.

These family heirlooms from Riders Up include crisp designs, thoughtful custom color management, digital drafts, and more.

Each cavalier requires between 1-2 hours of prep before painting begins. Prep to final clear coat can take anywhere from 4 to 8 hours depending on the complexity of the design.

“I would say I spend as much time prepping them as I do painting them. Honestly, to get them down to a really smooth finish before they start getting color on them, so no big holes in their face, no rough edges. Then once they're completely done, they get a very good, clear coat to protect them from UV and water,” Jones said.

HOW TALL? Measures 46 inches from the bottom of the base to the tip of his cap.

HOW HEAVY? Around 140 pounds

MAKE UP? Concrete exterior with metal reinforcements throughout.   My manufacturer replaces gravel with crushed marble and granite to give our jockeys the smooth finish and fine details we are known for.

HISTORY OF THE CAVALIER JOCKEY?  The "cavalier spirit" design usually depicts the "left arm" raised and uses a less exaggerated likeness of a young man, with non-descript features. Several of the "cavalier spirit" jockey statues are prominently displayed at both the entrance of the 21 Club in Manhattan and the entrance of the Santa Anita Park clubhouse in Los Angeles.

A 1947 magazine advertisement uses two images of cavalier-style lawn jockeys to underscore the statue's use as a symbol of hospitality and the hospitality associated with Old Taylor Kentucky Bourbon, stating: "Jockey hitching posts that invited guests to tarry are an old Kentucky tradition – another sign of a good host."
